Helpful Tips

If you aren't sure what to enter, hover over the input description for more details.

Start with a fixed strategy with specific rates of return on your investment, a fixed strategy for inflation, and a proportional strategy so withdrawals come out of all accounts at the same time.

The Social Security full retirement benefit amount is what you would get at full retirement age. Enter that value. The amount you actually get will automatically be calculated using that with the starting age you select.

Accounts: Make sure to create separate accounts for your spouse so the RMDs will be calculated correctly. You'll also want to have the flexibility to change the rates of return for each account. Use the Interest account type for things like Checking, Savings, CDs, etc. The New Contribution Amount and New Contribution Age are available in case you decide to change how much you contribute annually to that account. Maybe you can contribute more at age 50 or maybe you decide to contribute a smaller amount if you retire early. Contribution limits are automatically handled for when you exceed the limit for contributions (e.g., age 72).

Detail Calculation: After you enter as much information as you can, start by clicking the Detail Calculation button at the top. It will show you for each year what you expenses are and how much you have left in each account. Pay special attention to the Ending Balance at the top which lets you know if you had enough money for your entire plan.

Look for more:

To see how you would have done against actual rates in history select a Historical Return Strategy. Start with the default offset of 0 to see what years of S&P 500 rates will be used for your results (e.g., if you have 30 years until death your report would use 1990-2020). Change the offset to shift it back in time (e.g., see how your returns would have been if you retired during the 1970s).

Sweep Report: Look at the Sweep Report to help with decisions. It will show you the results for different values for the select option to the left of the button. For each value it shows how much money you have left (Ending Balance) at death. Pick a good value from the Sweep Report (usually at the top) to update your inputs and generate a Detailed Calculation to get full results using that value.
